Creating a Safe, Supportive Space for Veterans with Healthier Heroes

April 7
General News

At TJM Projects, we are proud to be working with Healthier Heroes, a veteran-led charity doing remarkable work supporting ex-service personnel and their families.

As part of our commitment to meaningful, community-based construction, we’ve recently completed a transformative refurbishment of a dilapidated former social housing facility. This building will now serve as a safe and supportive environment for veterans, helping them transition into stable accommodation and access key support services.

The Scope of Work

  • Our refurbishment covered a wide range of critical upgrades and improvements, including:
  • 20 fully refurbished bedrooms, each designed to offer comfort and dignity.
  • 20 en-suite bathrooms, all fitted with new sanitaryware, baths, and showers.
  • 20 new FD60 fire doors and frames installed throughout the building for maximum fire safety.
  • Complete flooring replacement across bedrooms, circulation areas, and kitchens.
  • Full redecoration, both internally and externally, restoring the building’s appearance and feel.
  • New shared kitchen facilities, giving residents spaces to cook and connect.
  • Ventilation system cleaned to TR19 standards, ensuring safe and healthy air quality.
  • All lighting replaced with LED fittings, improving energy efficiency and ambience.
  • Renewed fire alarm system for peace of mind.
  • Boilers commissioned and tested to provide reliable heating and hot water.
  • Fire doors adjusted and adapted throughout to maintain compliance and ease of use.

About Healthier Heroes

Established in 2018 by husband and wife team Andrew and Andrea Powell, Healthier Heroes was born out of personal experience and dedication. Andrew, a former Colour Sergeant with 16 years in the infantry, understands first-hand the challenges veterans face. Under their leadership, the organisation has won community awards, run leadership programmes, and created real, lasting impact.

This project marks a new chapter in their mission to provide homes—not just housing—for those who have served.

We’re honoured to support Healthier Heroes in this important work and look forward to catching up next week to discuss future plans.
